Head Lice

As gross as it sounds, when you hear these words you automatically become itchy, this is unfortunately but all to common occurrence is early childhood settings.

The facts are

  • Head lice do not survive long when they are not on the human head. Head lice can't survive on furniture, hats, bedding or carpet.

  • Head lice moves from one person's head to another via hair.

  • Head lice loves everyone so regardless of age, sex or how clean your hair is.

  • Proximately about 25% of early childhood children have or will have head lice at one or more times.

Treatment

Step 1 Treatment with a head lice product from your chemist. These are very easy to use.

Step 2 Comb hair immediately after you have washed out the treatment. Use a head lice conditioner or a white conditioner as this too will work. Make sure to use a fine tooth or nit comb. As this will help in getting rid of the head lice and the eggs (nits).

Step 3 Comb hair every 2 days using a fine tooth or the nit comb and conditioner as this will keep you on top of removing the lice and eggs. As it grows through its cycle.

Step 4 My recommendation is repeat the above treatment for 7 days after that first initial treatment. (Get that fine tooth comb, combing)

Step 5 Repeat the above until there is no sign of head lice and or eggs.

How to reduce the spread of head lice

  • Keep a fine tooth or lice comb in the bathroom and encourage all members to use it when they wash their hair.

  • Keep shoulder length hair tied back or in a braid

  • Regular check your children's hair.

  • teach older children to check their own.
