Reading Activities for Children You Don't Want to Miss Out on These Great Books for Reading With
Reading for kids can be a fun and entertaining activity, for both the adult and the child. Reading allows the child to experience and explore different storylines, learn about new things, and open their mind to a whole new world of exploring. For the parent, reading with their children provides with them a meaningful and fulfilling activity where they can spend valuable time with their child. Aside from this, reading with and reading to children helps them develop better reading skills, and this helps with better academic performance later on. After all, reading is a prerequisite to almost everything we learn.
So what are the best activities for children in reading? I can tell you that it certainly is NOT putting your child in front of a TV or a computer with programs or games that claims to "teach" your child to read. The absolute best choices for reading material for children are children's reading books. There are thousands and tens of thousands of colorful, interesting, and well written children's books with appropriate reading levels for all ages. We'll provide our reading lists for children with book recommendations that we think are very fun and enjoyable to read, and are also tested and approved by our own kids.
Books & Reading Lists - Children's Books Based on Reading Level
We taught our children to read before they turned 3, and by 3 and a half, our older daughter had already read dozens of children's books (by herself), and achieved a reading skill level of grade 2. While we started reading to our children from the day they are born, it's not until that they've developed some basic understanding of print, and developed some phonemic awareness, that we started having them read books on their own.
We go through a step-by-step program and process that teaches small children how to read, and slowly introduce appropriate books for their reading level.
Some of our favorites are the "Step Into Reading" books, that includes hundreds of different children's books that are categorized into books appropriate for different reading levels and reading skills. In total, there are 5 steps in "Step Into Reading" books, each with its own reading skill level, and these are:
Step 1: Ready to Read - appropriate for preschool to kindergarten children.
Step 2: Reading with some help - appropriate for preschool to grade 1 children.
Step 3: Independent reading - appropriate for children in grades 1 to 3.
Step 4: Reading Paragraphs - appropriate for children in grades 2 to 3.
Step 5: Ready for chapters - appropriate for children in grades 2 to 4.
There are some overlap in the reading steps since different children will have different reading skills. However, children who learn to read at a young age, will always excel at reading. Before our daughter turned 4 years old, she was already reading complete Step 4 books by herself, with occasional words that she needs some assistance with.
Below, we'll list some of our favorite books, or I should say our children's favorite Step Into Reading books.

Once you and your child get into these books, the one thing you'll notice is that some of the books seem a bit too easy for its Step category, while other books seem a bit too difficult for its Step category. You'll also notice that for some step 1 books, while the sentence structure is very simple, some of the words used are rather a bit difficult for beginning readers, and this is where I think some of the authors fell a bit short. But don't let this discourage you - Step Into Reading has some of the best children's books, and it is a series of books where it is actually categorized based on children's reading levels, and some of the books are truly fantastic, and fun to read.
Some of the books are fantasy books, others are adventure books, and yet others will teach your child a bit about history. So there is a wide variety of topics, and all the books also contain colorful illustrations to keep children interested. To be able to read these entertaining children's books, a small child must first learn to read by developing some basic reading skills and developing phonemic awareness skills.
